SKILL LEVEL:

Stitches and abbreviations (US Terminology):

  • Stitches: sts

  • Chain: ch

  • Single crochet: sc

  • Slip stitch: slst

Techniques:

Together with the stitches in the Terminology, other techniques used are:

  1. Sewing: To assembly the Scrunchie, I use the whip stitch. You can use any other stitch you like or simply assembly it slst around if you prefer!

  2. Colour Change : use the colour change method you prefer if you want to use multiple yarn. You can use the magic knot technique enjoy the tutorial!

Materials:

  • I used a hook size 3.5 mm and some cotton yarn in my stash of scrappy yarn - some are Drops Safran, other are Natura Cotton

If using light weight yarn, consider that the chunkier version takes around 15/20 grams, the smaller takes around 10 grams.

  • An elastic band, of course! :)

  • Measuring tape, stitch marks, and scissors

There are two versions possible for the Braided Scrappy&Crunchy Scrunchie!

Chunky version:

For this version, ch to obtain a chain of 6 cm

Skinny version:
For this version, ch to obtain a chain of 3 cm

So, pick your version of the  Braided Scrappy&Crunchy Scrunchie, let’s grab yarn and hook and let’s start crocheting!

Step 1: ch to reach the necessary length (6cm for the chunky version, 3 cm for the skinny one!)

For me, with Safran yarn and hook 3.5, it’s 12 ch for the

chunky version and 6 ch for the skinny version

Step 2: ch 1 turning chain, turn, sc in the first ch from the hook and sc until the end of the row

12 sc and 6 sc for me

Step 3: ch1, turn, sc until the end of the row

Step 4: ch1, turn, sc until the end of the row

Step5: ch1, turn, sl st until the end of the row

Step 6: ch1, turn, sc until the end of the row, in the back-loop-only of the sl st from the row below

You will see the braid feature appearing on the other side

NOTE: You do not want to sc in the braid feature (that’s the sc row in Step 4 brought in surface by the sl st in Step 5)

You want to sc in the sl st. This stitches are at the back of the braid feature

Repeat now Step 3 to Step 6  until you reach 35 cm in length.

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing

Assembly (pt. 1):

Step 1: sew the ends of the fabric (so the two short ends together).

Now we have a ring!

Step 2: now turn the fabric so that you can see the wrong side (the side without the braid features), and wrap the elastic

band around it

Step 3: Now the tricky part: we need to align the two long sides of the fabric and sew them together (or stitch around) with the elastic band in the middle. Stitch markers really help!

After sewing/stitch all around the fabric, weave in your ends (or hide them inside!) and enjoy your Scrunchie!
