Cobbles & Vines stitch tutorial (2)

In this tutorial, I'll teach you how to crochet the Cobbles & Vines custom stitch pattern! It's very easy to make while looking complex and gorgeous at the same time. It is an alteration of the waffle stitch, but instead of using combination of double crochet and front post double crochet, it uses single crochet stitches and front double crochet, and then, of course, the colour change creates the Cobble-like look!

You will find the full video tutorials at the bottom of this post to realise a little gauge swatch for your own projects, if you prefer learning with visual aids!

So grab some yarn, and let's crochet!

To follow the tutorials...

Skill level:

crochet beginners can follow this tutorial!

Materials:

To follow this tutorial, you will need two yarn (colour A & colour B). You want to use either the same yarn in two different colours, or two different yarn, in different colours, in similar weight.

I use here...

Yarn: Rico baby classic DK (50 g ~ 165 m) in red and white

Hook: 5 mm (or the hook recommended on the yarn label).

Stitches and abbreviations (US terminology):

In the following tutorial, we make use of:

  • chain - ch
  • single crochet - sc
  • front post double crochet - fpdc

Special Techniques:

Front Post Double crochet:

yo and insert your hook behind the single crochet three rows below, yo (3 loops on the hook). Pull through two loops. Pull through two loops again (1 loop on the hook).

Colour change:

Here the colour of yarn is changed every two rows at the end of the row.

Method 1:

To change colour from colour A to colour B, or the other way around, for the last sc of the row, insert the hook as usual, but yarn over with the new color. Turning chain in the new colour, and follow the next row as from instruction.

Method 2:

To change colour from A to colour B, or the other way around, complete the previous row, and ch 1, turn, in the new colour.

Pattern:

In Colour A (white in pics):

Ch 15

Row 1: sc in the second ch from hook. sc in each ch. tc. [14]

Row 2: sc until the end of the row. tc. turn. [14]

Row 3: sc until the end of the row. tc. turn. [14]

In Colour B (red in pic):

Row 4: *sc in the first two sts, fpdc in the next st - placed three rows below*.

Repeat until you have 2 sts left. Place a sc in each. tc. turn. [14]

Row 5: sc until the end of the row. tc. turn. [14]

Keep repeating Rows 2 to 5 to create your own little swatch.
